The Hustle is a dance party highlighting the lush, rhythmic, percussive, and deep sounds of soulful and deep house mixed with disco and upbeat jazz. This month, we are welcoming a Pittsburgh legend to our stage for an all-night affair, with Selecta performing a special five-hour extended DJ set from open to close.
Selecta has been DJing in Pittsburgh and around the country for over 35 years, cutting his teeth in hip-hop but proving to crowds locally, regionally, and internationally that he’s far more than a hip-hop DJ. His experience—spanning a long track record of co-hosting and performing at The Union, his time as a radio host for Grand Groove Radio on Pittsburgh’s WYEP, countless collaborations with the Pittsburgh International Jazz Festival, and a long-standing role as the official DJ of the Pittsburgh Steelers Fashion Show, amongst many others has solidified him as part of Pittsburgh’s DJ elite.
Since the COVID lockdowns, his deep love for radio but also sharing and discovering music has turned its focus toward the livestream world. Since he started just over five years ago, he has amassed over 22K Twitch followers, has claimed Twitch Partner status and has played to his “Berry Bunch” multiple times per week for the last few years, with no signs of slowing. Word to "Jimuary" where he streamed every day for 30 days straight.
Come to Spirit Lodge Saturday March 14th for a full five hours of the right music—the healing music amongst those who want to free their feet of the week and exfoliate their spirit with soul-touching house.

Selecta
A pioneer of the Pittsburgh DJ and Hip-Hop scene since the late 1980s, James Scoglietti, better known simply as Selecta (the DJ moniker is superfluous as Selecta is Jamaican patois for “DJ”) started his DJ career in 1988 at the ripe age of 15 as a frequent guest on the University of Pittsburgh’s WPTS radio station. He then parlayed his radio experience into residencies at several of Pittsburgh’s most celebrated venues over the years to follow.
In 1998, he was named “Best Hip-Hop Radio Personality” by In-Pittsburgh News Weekly, and the following year he opened Pittsburgh’s first solely Hip-Hop based retail music outlet, 720 Records. 720 would go on to morph into a coffee shop, retail outlet and performance space, before shuttering in 2015.
Selecta has supported many international touring artists such as De La Soul, Pharcyde, The Roots, Rakim, KRS-One, Moonchild, Zo!, The Midnight Hour, The Foreign Exchange, and countless other luminaries. He currently hosts a weekly hip-hop, jazz, funk, and soul–based radio program on Twitch called Breakfast Jammies, airing Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9AM to 1PM.
